Carl Yates

  • Hi everyone - Well, it's been a long, long time. But I have no doubt that we grew up in one of the best possible times. What a great high school life we had! Many of us walked to school and just about everywhere else we went and did so unafraid. We didn't have to worry about locking our doors everytime we went in and out of the house or car and we had some great teachers along the way.
  • I have been married to Judy Montgomery Yates for 43 years. Judy was a 1961 SHS graduate and served the Louisville Community in a number of positions with the YWCA Spouse Abuse Program, the Dare To Care Food Bank, Louisville Board of Aldermen and the Jefferson County Board of Elections. Judy and I have three sons, three terrific daughters-in-law, and four beautiful grandchildren- (two boys, ages 8 & 3 and two girls, 6 & 11). All three sons and all three daughters-in-law have college degrees. One son and one daughter-in-law are both elementary teachers in Jefferson County and have earned their Master degrees. One son is a mortgage banker in Detroit and is currently working on his masters degree. One son works for Humana here in Louisville. Both Judy and I attended U of L but never finished our degree work, a point that we sometimes regret.
  • As some of you know, I've spent the last 36+ years in law enforcement, 27 years with the former Louisville Police Department and the last nine years with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Prior to starting my law enforcement career, I worked eight years with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, managing clubs in Louisville and Ohio and then two years in sales before realizing my boyhood dream of becoming a police officer. I left the LPD in 1998, retiring as a Sergeant in charge of public information. I also instructed classes in Media Relations for Law Enforcement for over 20 years and served as a Media Consultant and guest speaker for several Colleges, Universities, small cities and Private Sector Companies. Currently, I am a Lieutenant Colonel with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, in charge of Community Services, Training and Media Information.

  • I served eight years in the Army National Guard. I also manage a law enforcement rock band called, "Street Heat". The Band performs annually for over 30,000 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students all across Kentucky with messages of "Say No to Drugs and Violence".
  • I am often asked, "When are you going to retire?" I have decided to answer that question with a similar response that football coach Howard Schnellenberger often used when asked about the prospects of winning a National Title. "I am on a collision course with retirement, and the only variable is Time". Seriously, I think it will be within the next year. I have been richly blessed with good health. I take no prescriptions and have no other problems of which I am aware. I love to play golf, work-out in the gym, travel, take long walks on the beach and watch sports, especially Cardinal Football & Basketball and I am slowly trying to write a murder mystery. Judy and I sold our house in J-Town after the kids graduated from college and moved to our houseboat on the Ohio River, where we have lived for the last 16 years. We also have a Class A Motorhome for traveling. That's me. I would love to hear from any of you about you.
