Shirley Ann Berger and Carl Goodman were married in 1963. They are blessed with 3 grown children and 8 grandchildren. Carl and Shirley enjoy camping, hiking and traveling. They are both active in volunteer church work.
 
For 15 years, Shirley held several positions at Naval Ordnance Station Louisville from CADD operator to Editor of the FCIM Magazine, a quarterly bulletin for the Flexible Computer Integrated Manufacturing Community. In 1996 Shirley accepted the position of Executive Assistant for the Association for Enterprise Integration (AFEI), an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association. She and Carl moved to Washington, D.C. Shirley spent 5 years facilitating collaboration meetings between government and industry for AFEI. After extensive travel in the U.S. and other countries, Shirley retired and she and Carl moved back to Louisville in 2001. She now volunteers in church music ministry, traveling, camping and hiking with Carl and thoroughly enjoys playing with her grandchildren.
 
Carl retired as a supervisor from Naval Ordnance Station Louisville in 1996. Carl is an avid long distance hiker and backpacker. In 1996 he thru-hiked the historic Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine (2175 miles) and in 2008 Carl thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs through Washington, Oregon and California between Mexico and Canada (2650 miles). For the past nine years Carl has enjoyed working as an AT Conservancy Ridgerunner. He monitors hiker activity and maintains 30 miles of the AT in the southern end of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park from early spring to end of May each year.
