  • In sadness yet in celebration of a life well lived, we announce the passing of Judith “Jan or Judy” Ann Haynes, born May 21, 1942. Jan was 80 years old when she passed away on March 3, 2023. Jan is reunited with her Mother, Jewell Mae Butler, her Father, Elvis Julian Willoughby, and her beloved Poodle Kyndalea. Jan is survived by her daughter, Monica Y. Haynes, her sister Jeanette Gaslin, her ex-husband Earl Wendell Haynes, and many friends and extended family.
  • Jan retired from Johnsontown Road Elementary School as a bookkeeper. She loved books and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed puzzles and playing computer games (City of Heroes was a long-time favorite). An amateur genealogist, Jan spent many happy hours researching ancestry with her daughter.

  2023 OBITUARY

  • She was a member of the Red Hat Society, as well as a consummate crafter. She wasn’t intimidated by the prospect of learning a wide variety of new crafts; she enjoyed crochet and knitting the most.
  • She was also an avid cook and well known for her love of spices and her enjoyment of recipe experiments. While every dish Jan made was unique, one key ingredient was always included: Love.
  • Love was a central theme for how Jan chose to live her life. Love of friends, love of family, and love of children. Like others in her family, she strived to help children grow and succeed whenever possible.
  • Jan could be counted on to support those she cared about and was willing to do anything required to solve a problem. If you had a daunting task or tragedy to face, she would face it with you head on, tackle it, and try and turn it into a positive.
  • She was tough and strong yet had the softest, most generous heart. Jan wrapped her kindness in a no-nonsense, yet sassy exterior. She’d do anything in the world for her family and friends. Her love and commitment to those she cared about ran fathoms deep.
  • If there is one thing Jan should be remembered for, it’s the fact she was a wonderful mother! Jan was patient, fair, and there wasn’t anything she couldn’t overcome one way or the other.
  • In lieu of flowers, the family requests you plant a memorial tree from sympathy.legacy.com or by calling 888-303-5240
