- Roy A. Leavelle Sr. Obituary The only child born March 13, 1942 in Jefferson County, Louisville, Kentucky to the proud parents William H. Leavelle, Jr and Willa Mae (nee Springer) Leavelle. Roy’s active, beautiful childhood with many wonderful memories of his loving grandparents, Edna and William Leavelle, Sr. (both deceased) who were instrumental in rearing him. They helped him through Virginia Avenue Elementary and Duval Jr. High School.
- Roy attended Lincoln Institute where he ran track. Later he graduated in 1960 from Louisville, Kentucky’s Shawnee High School where he also ran the 880 in track and was 3rd in the state.
2023 Obituary
- In June of 1960, Roy enlisted in the USAF. He was assigned numerous tours of duty, beginning in Syracuse, NY at Hancock Field AFB for two years. During Roy’s military career he was stationed also in South Vietnam seven years, Wright Patterson AFB many years, Clark AFB in Philippine Islands two years, and four years at Randolph AFB and Carswell AFB in Texas. In 1972 Roy was stationed in Vientiane Laos where he served on special assignment working at the US Embassy. Then Roy was reassigned to WPAFB where during those four years he changed his career field from communications specialist to communications electronic programmer. During the 20 years serving in the USAF, S/Sgt. Roy Leavelle, Sr. received numerous awards, ribbons and certificates. In June of 1980 Roy was honorably discharged from the US Air Force.
- In 1974, Roy met the love of his life and was united in Holy matrimony in 1977 to Sheila M. Collins. Their relationship exemplified pure love.l
- Roy joined Zion Baptist Church of Xenia, Ohio with his loving wife, Sheila and they were baptized together by Rev. Jewel S. Hanley on April 30, 1980. Over the years at Zion Baptist Church Roy sung in two choirs, The Senior Choir and The Men’s Choir. Then on September 11, 1988 Roy became one of God’s chosen - a Deacon. During which Roy faithfully served as chairman of the deacon board for several years, and now as Deacon Emeritus..
- Roy attended Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio for one year. During this time, he reentered the work force as a civil servant at WPAFB. He began as a telephone operator and went on to become a resource manager at Defense Electronic Supply Center in Dayton. Later he returned to WPAFB as a communication’s electronic programmer. Roy received many performance awards over the years and in February 2004 he s uccessfully retired from civil service at WPAFB.
- Roy was a wonderful foster parent for many years with the Greene County Children Services Board.
- Roy leaves behind a very loving and caring family including his beautiful wife, Sheila M. Leavelle and a host of family and friends. Roy ascended into heaven to be with our Lord on March 31, 2023
